Relationships between climate change and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: a study of young Danish public perception

This study examined the knowledge and opinions of the public concerning the relationship between climate change and poverty in the developing world and the potential role for climate change mitigation strategies. This was then compared to published literature and the opinions of experts in this field. The study was carried out during September-October 2010, Copenhagen, Denmark. The data were collected through online questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussion and tools of participatory rural appraisal to achieve the objective. Climate change is being increasingly recognized as a pressing issue on a global level however, there is little knowledge as to how the general public perceives climate change and its impacts. Moreover, the lack of clear international aid policies in this arena suggests there is limited understanding among the general public as to the resilience of resource-poor people to present and future changes in climate. Results suggested that younger Danish people did possess the knowledge to identify relationships between the climate change and poverty but that recognising more complex associations remains challenging. Results also varied widely between different ages. Despite some useful data, the researchers pinpointed many areas in the study used methods that would require adjustments in order to make future research more reliable.
